Nightmares

Why are they called Nightmares? Was the first one about a horse?

That is unlikely. According to the Oxford English Dictionary--

1. a. A female spirit or monster supposed to settle on and produce a feeling of suffocation in a sleeping person or animal. Also fig. Now rare.

I don't know much about the topic, but having shared sleeping space with members of the opposite sex, I am not at all surprised to find that this arose from feelings of crowdedness, suffocation, and terror-- particularly upon waking up the next morning.

...It also doesn't help if she is, in fact, a horse.
